Our friendly community supports all new arrivals, particularly students who are new to the English language.
At ISWA, English is the language of instruction.
For new arrivals with a native language, ISWA specialises in an enrichening programme of English Additional Language (EAL) or English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The aim of the EAL programme is to help students become confident and successful in the academic classroom using English as the medium of study.
New arrivals will spend time in their regular year group each day, with their English-speaking peers. In addition, students will also receive specialist instruction in English as an additional language during the school day. This amounts to five sessions per week or approximately 3.5 hours per week.
There is an extra cost to the parents/guardians, which is reviewed each semester. Students remain in the EAL program until a level of proficiency is reached that enables them to fully participate in all activities at the class level. Assessments focus on the students’ skills and understandings in each of the language modes – listening, speaking, reading and writing in English.
Families newly arrived at ISWA can be given ideas as to how to support their children learning English while living in Australia.
ISWA does not offer a full-time or exclusive course such as English language courses for overseas students (ELICOS). Students entering Year 9 onwards, may consider a short ELICOS course at Phoenix Academy in West Perth, Western Australia. This may provide an advantage of English proficiency before transferring to the academically rigorous courses of our senior school.
